Spa Planning

Regulations and Permits

Check with your local municipality or county office for information about permits and specific regulations. Swimming pool regulations apply to spas.

Building Permits are required, even with portable units depending on water depth. They are available from your municipal office.

Plumbing permits and gas permits are available from your municipal office. A plumbing permit is required if the spa is connected to your home's drainage system.

Electrical Permits are ALWAYS required. They are available from your municipal office. Depending on the type of spa, lifesaver outlets or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) circuit breakers must be installed.

If you are installing a spa outdoors, consider the following regulations (Canadian Electric Code) when deciding on the location:

  • electrical outlets must be 10 feet away from the spa.
  • Electrical outlets between 6 to 10 feet must be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.
  • Lighting within 10 feet of the spa must be connected with a GFCI breaker.
  • The electrical meter must be 10 feet away from the spa.
  • Overhead power lines must be 10 feet away from the spa.
